Jack Stewart
is one of the founder members of Perth and Kinross Pensioners forum
and is a campaigner for older peoples welfare.
Jack decided
to stand in the Mid Scotland and Fife Region on behalf of the SSCUP
(Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party) in the 2007 elections.
Mid Scotland
and Fife Region is a huge area which stretches from Loch Lomond to the
Grampian Mountains, then down to Dunfermline and Stirling.
All the
votes cast for the SSCUP in Mid Scotland and Fife will be combined and
Mr Swinburne (who was the first ever pensioners MSP) may have candidates
like jack helping to look after older peoples interests in the Scottish
Parliament.
The SSCUP's
Manifesto is:
Abolish Poverty for all Scottish Senior Citizens with the basic pension
increased to £160 per week for men and women.
Banish Means Testing for all Scottish Senior Citizens.
Council Tax to be replaced by a fairer local income tax.
Ditch Water Rates for all pensioner households.
End the
sale of peoples homes to pay for residential care.
We
have proved that older people are a force to be reckoned with.
So lets take it a step further.
During
the period of calm after the election the Perth & Kinross Pensioners
Forum will examine exactly how efficient the support services we have
in Perth & Kinross indeed are, and how with consultation and persuation,
working through a democratically elected delegated liaison committee
we can highlight the needs of older people.
Health
and Community Care.
Treating illness is of prime importance, but keeping healthy is even
more important - and this means both mental and physical health.
But most older people do not come under the umbrella of Health and Social
Care Services, and this is due to poor access to low level support,
high eligibility criteria for services, and a degree of stigma in accepting
support and the inflexibility of guidelines.
WE
NEED ASSESSMENTS DONE ON ALL OLDER PEOPLE OVER 70 TO ESTABLISH WHAT
KIND OF HELP THEY REQUIRE (IF INDEED ANY)
or is this a step too far for the NHS.
